On the Road With Jesus to ChristmasUzorak
Accidental encounters or not?
Recently, I spoke to a business associate. He said that after our conversation, he had met someone from my team “by chance". They ended up having an extensive conversation about faith. Amazing how often this can happen. Something happens for which you do not really have an explanation. At times mysteries are revealed but often go unexplained as well.
Today we read about two seemingly chance meetings. Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple - a habit at that time. Every child was brought there in order to be “dedicated" to God.
The temple was the religious centre in those days. Many people came there. Joseph and Mary were no special appearances and no FI’s (Famous Israelites). And many people came to dedicate their child.
In the temple square, two people “by chance” approach them. First Simeon and then Anna. They start talking to them. They speak special words about Jesus. They thank God and warn Mary and Joseph. It must have made a deep impression on Jesus’ parents.
What is amazing is that both Simeon and Anna have known for a long time that this would happen. About Simeon, it was said that he would not die before seeing the Saviour. That day the Holy Spirit had encouraged him to go to the temple. Something similar happens in the meeting with Anna. She sees the liberation of Jerusalem has come, now that the Redeemer has come.
Clearly, these were not accidental encounters. God worked with His Spirit to move people.
Just like He does in our lives too. God’s Spirit is at work. Every day, and also in your life. Open up yourself and open your eyes. Don't perceive things too quickly as “accidental”.
