Work As Worship: Identity and Calling

DAY 2 OF 3

Have you ever prayed before a test? Have you taken a couple of seconds to silently ask the Spirit of God to give you wisdom and remind you of what you've studied?

What about when you clocked into your job bagging groceries, or when you arrived at a particularly gruesome basketball practice?

In today's verses, we have examples of two different types of jobs. The first refers to artisans or craftsmen working on the Tabernacle while in the second verse, we discover that Paul was a tentmaker.

Does one type of work seem more spiritual than the other?

Is it easier for you to imagine the Spirit of God inspiring the building of his temple than it is to think of him guiding Paul's hand as he wrestled with yards of fabric and sewed the seams?

Pastor or bus driver? Missionary or executive? Worship leader or warehouse stocker?

Do you think that one of these jobs is more godly? Do you think one of these jobs requires more prayer or spiritual wisdom?

What about Paul's work during the week as a tentmaker and his work on the Sabbath as an evangelist?

Throughout the Bible, we see God's interest in being a part of every aspect of our lives.

The line between the sacred and the routine is one that we create.

Think about your dream work. Now picture God pouring out his wisdom and creativity on your everyday efforts and experiencing his joy as you fulfill his calling.

  • When you think about your possible future job, what are three tangible ways you can see God's Spirit guiding you or filling you with skill?
  • Have you ever hesitated to share your dreams with someone because you didn't think they were essential or successful enough?
