DITA 4 NGA 12

You Are Debt-Free:
The Greek phrase for making someone “debt-free” is ἐξαλείφω (exaleiphó), and it means to wipe out, erase, obliterate, and cancel.

Jesus has paid your full debt forever.

When was the last time you owed someone for something big? For many people, that day is probably today! If you’re like most people, you probably have had some kind of debt in your life. Student loans, mortgages, car payments, and credit card bills are an unfortunate and costly part of life. They control us, and oftentimes, it feels like they hold us captive. But for those who have made the final payment and stand free and clear, owing the bank absolutely nothing, there is a sense of freedom and peace that is hard to put into words.

But are we slaves? Prisoners?

First, we need to realize God can do anything if we trust Him; second, He has a heart for prisoners. We all were prisoners in need of having our debts forgiven. Being debt-free is not just a feeling for the wealthy of this earth, though you may feel the burden of debt. What if someone came to you and offered to free you from that pressure? How would you respond? Most of us live with that pressure, but in the life of the Spirit, God tells us that the most important debt of all time has been paid. You and I no longer owe the debt (which is death and condemnation) for our sin and shame. It has been wiped out for all eternity. God also desires to free you from fear. I hope you understand this is your reality and accept it.

I want to leave you with some scriptures that I pray will solidify the truth of your new identity—a free son or daughter of God. Galatians 5:1 (NASB) declares, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.”

In Luke 4:18 (NASB), Jesus proclaims His mission to free you and return you to God:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed.”

The core message of this devotional is that you must be glued to the truth in order to see yourself the way God sees you because when you “know the truth . . . the truth will set you free” (John 8:32, NASB). And here’s the truth: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death” (Romans 8:2, NASB).

As we close, I urge you to meditate on this final scripture: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed”—John 8:36 (ESV).
