Psalm 23: Walk With the Shepherd

DITA 4 NGA 14

Walk in Peace

He leads me beside still waters. (Psalm 23:2b)

I live near Lake Michigan. Sometimes when there is no wind, the lake resembles glass—perfectly still, perfectly peaceful. But then, a sudden storm will produce huge waves. Life can be like this sometimes. Everything can be going well, but a new health diagnosis, a sudden death, a job loss can overwhelm us like the winds of a storm. In times like these, we need the Shepherd to lead us beside his still waters again.

In today’s reading, the disciples forgot who was with them in the boat when storm waters were overtaking them. Jesus was sleeping peacefully as they feared for their lives. In their panic, the disciples woke Jesus and accused him of not caring for them. But Jesus, who embodied peace, calmed the wind and the waves saying, “Peace! Be still!” (v. 39). The word used for peace here means “hush, mute, be silent.” Jesus hushed the storm and took away its voice. The waters became still. Jesus rebuked the disciples for being afraid. They then wondered, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41)

What storms are you facing? Imagine the Shepherd leading you beside his still waters and filling you with his peace. Hear him hush the voices that want to rob you of peace—voices of fear, anxiety, despair, and doubt. Remember no storm can overwhelm you when you have the Shepherd with you.

As you pray, walk in peace with Jesus.
