Why the Cross?Shembull
I Thirst
As we continue to meditate on Jesus's statements from the Cross, today we look at just three words. "I am thirsty" (see John 19:28-29).
After enduring unthinkable stress: imprisonment, trials, floggings, and crucifixion, the Son of God, who made the waters of the world, experienced extreme dehydration and thirst. In this statement, Jesus fulfilled another prophecy (see Psalm 69:21).
Still, there is a deeper meaning to His thirst. Psalm 42 says, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" Jesus cried out with the psalmist; He was thirsting for the presence and fellowship of God the Father during the separation of the Cross. No amount of water could quench that thirst.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be able to say with the psalmist, "My soul pants for you, O God." May I have that deep desire for Your presence and for fellowship with You.
They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst (Psalm 69:21).

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (I Corinthians 1:18, NIV). The Cross of Christ is the central event of history, but it has also been a source of controversy and offense. In this stirring devotional series, Michael Youssef inspires our appreciation for the offending, redeeming, and very personal work Christ accomplished on the cross. These messages will ground believers in the basis of their faith while guiding unbelievers to a better understanding of the death of Christ on the cross.
