Principle #5: Just do it...by faith

Anyone who has ever done strategic planning for a goal might be familiar with a SWOT analysis –Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. When a SWOT analysis is done correctly, it gives you an accurate idea of how well-positioned you are to achieve said goal. Many of us have little issue identifying our strengths. Where most people have challenges is with their weaknesses.

First, it takes complete honesty and humility to call ourselves out on what would otherwise be blind spots in our pursuits. Matthew 5:5 reminds us that blessed are humble because it takes intentionality and introspection to walk in humility. The second reason that understanding weaknesses can be challenging is that it often highlights our limitations. Enter our final principle.

As believers, we know the difference that faith makes, but what about grace? Some things will take the grace of God to complete. It does not matter if we have great intentions, ambition, or a lot of resources. There is something about our humanity that will always remind us of our limitations. This is where we must rely on God to carry us the rest of the way.

Let's recall that even Jesus reached a point where the grace of the Father was needed to complete His goal here on earth. In Luke 22:42-43 while preparing for his death, Jesus spends some time in prayer. Although the very nature of God, He asks, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me" in Luke 22:42a. Scripture tells us that the Father's immediate response in verse 43 is to

strengthen him.

While none of us have a goal to die for the salvation of humanity, at times, our goals can feel impossible and daunting. The good news is that you don't have to do anything alone. Goal setting is never easy, but it is often an indication of a yearning to do more with the life God has given us. When we are submitted to Him, we can trust that He will strengthen us, not only for the pursuit and the process but for the expected end of completion of our goals.

1. Have I surrendered my goals and pursuits to God, or am I still self-reliant?

2. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds me that God has good plans to bring me to an expected end. For my current goals, what is my expected end?

3. What does faith in God look like for my current circumstances and ambitions?
