We Have an Announcement to Make

Every now and then, we humans need to be reminded even of the most important things—especially those that shape our thinking, our values, and our outlook on life. This is one of the reasons behind ceremonies, festivals, and holidays. We tune in once again with the most important things in life for us.

In the same way, when we celebrate communion, we are announcing the fulfillment of Christ’s work on the cross, which granted us entry into Heaven and the family of God and made possible our reconciliation with the Father.

Jesus not only redeemed us from the transgressions under the first covenant by means of His death. He came back to life and promised He is coming back for us because He loves us. This means that, at the Lord’s Supper, we are announcing not only His death but also His return.

Isaiah 53 is a prophecy about what would happen to Christ on the cross. It says that He would endure bitter rejection, be badly wounded for our transgressions and that our iniquities would be laid upon Him. On the cross, He backed up the claim that His body would be broken for us. He took the cup voluntarily. It was not forced upon Him. He chose the cup out of His love for all of us.

God was pleased when His Son went to the cross to shed His blood for our sins because, by Jesus’ obedience, we would be made family once again. The wrath of God against sin, which was supposed to be for us, was fully consumed on Jesus’ body on the cross. He died a death He did not deserve so that we can live a life we don’t deserve when we believe. He took our place at the cross so that we could take our place with Him as children of God. That’s God’s mercy and grace!

That is why it is important for us to take communion in the right spirit and the right heart, as it reflects the work of God’s Son on our behalf. It is also a certainty of hope for His return. The truth of what Christ did was proof of His love for us. The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is not meant only to be a time of spiritual examination and grief but rather a time of thanksgiving and joyful anticipation of seeing the Lord return soon.

Lord Jesus, I thank You that You have shown Your love for us by going to the cross. Thank You for providing us with the celebration of communion to remember Your broken body and the blood You shed. I am grateful that it is also a time to rejoice that You are soon coming back for us and that we should never lose hope until that day comes.

[Truth & Love] in Word and Deed

Jesus’ death and resurrection, as well as the promise of His return, prove His unending love for each of us both in words and deeds. Jesus said that there is no greater love than someone giving his life for his friends, but He didn’t merely say it. He did it.
