Searching for the Perfect Wave
Have you found the perfect wave? Have you surfed your best wave yet?
In the classic surfing movie, “The Endless Summer,” you can see and appreciate the insatiable thirst for waves that every surfer has. We all seek, at least for a few moments, to live that meaningful connection with the sea, in a barrel or a wave that we wish would be endless.
When we have an epic surf session, that feeling stays with us for awhile. We talk about our waves, share photos on social media, and rejoice over the details in our memory. But that sensation inevitably fades and we go looking for more. There’s where that famous phrase every surfer says – “one last wave!” – comes from. (Obviously, no one believes it!)
Many people have searched for satisfaction or connection in different activities, people, or places. We hold on, as much as we can, to our best waves, our jobs, our trips, our partners, skills, or anything else – but inevitably we’re unable to fill our own spirit completely.
Jesus saw this clearly in many encounters with the people of His time. Maybe the most noticeable was His encounter with the Samaritan woman, who’d tried to satisfy her thirst with partners (John 4:1–42). One day in the sun, when she was getting water, Jesus talked to her at the well about a source of living water that would take away her thirst forever.
At first she didn’t understand. She thought Jesus meant something literal and magical that would save her the trip to the well every day, until she was able to think about life more profoundly and see the story of her life. Then she was able to understand it wasn’t something external that Jesus was offering her, but a life source that came from inside her and would flow like a river in her.
How is that feeling of fullness going on in your life?
Have you found satisfaction, or have you not found that source of living water yet?
It’s not about a wave you can find in the exterior, nor in a paradise-like beach, as amazing as it might be. Nowhere outside of you will you find this fullness, but Jesus offers you a source of living waves that comes from your heart, found through Him.
The true, perfect wave will arrive, once you open your heart to the Creator of the waves, in God’s perfect paradise beach.
So, yes, Jesus, come! Aloha Jesus!

Jesus was the first-ever known man to walk on water. One day, He called his friend Peter and invited him to step onto the water and walk to Him, and asked him to ignore the storm around him. If you feel rocked by the waves around you or struggles in your life and need a rock to hold onto, this is the plan for you.
