Eve & MaryShembull
Genesis 3:1-5 (NIV) says:
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ ”
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The enemy, the father of lies, (John 8:44) called God a liar. He hated Eve while pretending he was advocating for her rights. He was the first 'frenemy'.
When the enemy said, "You will not certainly die", he was basically saying God's Word cannot be trusted. When he said, "For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil", it was an attempt to convince Eve that God was keeping something good away from her. Eve was created in the likeness of God, she did not need to be like God. Eve had God. Eve had everything!
The enemy still challenges God's Word concerning our lives. We must never forget that God is not a liar (Numbers 23:19) and the Bible is infallible (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We must not forget that every good thing we will ever need can be found in our relationship with God (Luke 12:32; Psalm 34:10; Psalm 84:11).
When you feel worthless and the weight of shame tries to overcome you, remember God's Word says "you were bought with a price" (1 Corinthians 6:20) and "you are God's special possession" (1 Peter 2:9).
We must not believe that God's commandments are designed to keep us from something good. If you have Jesus, you have everything. In Jesus, we have peace, hope, joy, and every good thing.
Dear woman, you are full of God's power.
