Living Open-Handed: Devotions for Surrendering Control and Finding Joy in the Unexpected

DAY 7 OF 10

The Best Armor

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. PSALM 23:5

When life feels overwhelming, I start to make lists of what I can control and what I cannot. Do you ever do that? It sounds silly, but I’ll tell you that my “not in control” list is (a) always lengthier than I’d like and (b) a fabulous reminder to bring it all back to God. Not only is God the most qualified General to lead in battle, but He is also the most generous and prepared, as today’s Scripture, Psalm 23:5, reminds us. When life is out of control or our enemies are all around us, we can wholly trust God to protect and guide us. When we depend on Him, we don’t just get through the day, we stride confidently.

Imagine entering a banquet feast and having your enemies seated all around you but knowing you were completely safe and cared for. Those gawking at you wouldn’t be able to touch a hair on your head because the God of the heavens was in your corner. That is how David, who wrote Psalm 23:5, feels in God’s presence and how we can too! What is the significance of David saying God anoints him with oil? It symbolizes God’s blessing, protection, and favor. In ancient times, anointing with oil was a common practice used to honor guests or to set them apart for a higher purpose. David is saying that even in the midst of adversity, God sets him apart, calling him to a special purpose, calling him worthy. David says that his cup overflows; he has more than enough for his needs! This is how God cares for you, watches over you, and blesses you! Are you open to receiving that today?

Dear Lord, thank You for the ways You guide me and protect me. Please help me remember that I am secure in You, that You bless me, and that I have more than I need in You. Amen.

Reflect: Where do you need to trust that God has a table prepared for you in the presence of your enemies? Do you believe God not only protects you but also blesses you?
