Sabbath Rest in a Restless World

DAY 6 OF 15

Embrace Your Assignment

Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him. (v. 17)

Yesterday we saw how, even in a fallen world, almost any work can be good. This includes being a CEO, a teacher, a mechanic, a stay-at-home parent, a factory worker, or a farmer. The what is not as important as the how. The key is to do it with integrity and excellence for the glory of God and the good of others.

For this reason, in Corinth, the apostle Paul instructs believers in Jesus to “lead the life that the Lord has assigned to [you], and to which God has called [you]” (v. 17). This passage is tricky because Paul is addressing slaves. Paul is not endorsing slavery. If slaves can earn their freedom, Paul urges them to do so. But for those who can’t, Paul wants to encourage them that, because they are free in Christ, even their work as slaves can honor God and be a witness.

Let’s apply this to our work in general. Paul is saying something radical here - instead of trying to find the perfect job that gives you purpose, find purpose in the work God has called you to do right where you are.

This doesn’t mean there won’t be times when God calls us to leave a job or switch careers. But Paul urges us to see our work, however mundane, as a calling—a post where God has placed us for a purpose. That post may not be permanent, but for now, embrace your assignment and let God work through you.

As you pray, ask God to help you find purpose in the work he’s given you.
