We tend to think that thoughts are neutral and that it’s only our actions that matter. Not only do our thoughts often lead to our actions, our thoughts flavor our entire lives. The fact that Paul wrote this truth to the Corinthians about arguments and pretenses that stand in opposition to the knowledge of God means that we are going to encounter opposition. His next directive—take every thought captive—implies that a good portion of the battle is in our minds. Some thoughts are going to set themselves up against the thoughts of God, and we need to stand against them. If something besides truth is swimming around in your mind, take it captive and “make it obedient to Christ.”
One of the ways we live as beloved sons and daughters of the king is in our minds. Here is part of what is true about who you are that you can focus on: You are as righteous as Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). You are a son or daughter of the king (Romans 8:16-17). God loves you and nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39). God Himself has come to live inside of you through His Spirit (2 Timothy 1:14). Some forces stand in opposition to us living as the sons and daughters we are. Ask God to help you believe who you are and walk in it. Jesus gave His life to make you His—so you can live as His.

No matter how we feel about a new year, it can offer a fresh start. Maybe God has something for you in this season. Maybe the Holy Spirit might be pointing something out for you. We all want to live for what truly matters, and maybe God can use this year’s fresh start to help us point our lives more in that direction.
