God's Answer to an Identity CrisisChikamu
Desperately Seeking Approval
Movie Soundbite: “I’ve been thinking about what you said when you were home. I’ve always been proud of you. I’m sorry if you felt I wasn’t.” – Mary Montgomery
Watch Clip #5.
God Soundbite: After singing at the Harvest Festival, the clone asks Mary Montgomery (Madison’s mother), Are you proud of me now? The question is not responded to until later in the movie when Mary FaceTimes Madison before the Winter Formal. It is a powerful little scene when we hear Mary say, Madison I have always been proud of you. It was very important for Madison to hear her mother say this. Similarly, we often look to our parents or other important people in our lives to tell us they are proud of us. Although it is encouraging to hear words of affirmation, it is more important to hear the voice of God reminding you of his intent for you. God inspired your conception. David writes, For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14. God knew you before you were born and he loves you. His knowledge of the whole picture provides a sense of security. He knows us inside and out. He says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. So, even if your earthly mother has never told you she is proud of you, God sees and loves you. In response to this truth, we can praise God and step into a full life allowing him to guide us.
Meditate on the idea that because God is perceptive (all-knowing) you can be wise.
Prayer Soundbite: Dear Lord, it is easier for me to trust what I think I know than it is to trust what I cannot see. Please help me to embrace your words—that I am fearfully and wonderfully made in your image. May what is true about me echo in my mind, silencing the negative things I have heard from others. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
Soundbite for the Day: I can be wise because the I AM is perceptive.
