The Secrets of the Kingdom

Who doesn’t love being let in on a secret?

There’s something unexpectedly empowering about knowing something that only few others know. Something that grants you the power to choose: Will you keep it to yourself, or will you tell the world?

That’s likely how Jesus’ disciples—His closest followers—might’ve felt at His words here.

After hearing their Teacher speak to others in parables, the disciples finally get up the courage to ask Jesus a seemingly simple question:

“Why do you speak to the people in parables?” (v.10)

In other words, they’re asking, “Why aren’t you being straight up with them? Why are you telling all these stories to get to the bottom line? Why not just let them in on the secret?”

Jesus’ answer is telling. To His disciples, the secrets had been revealed. They knew what the rest of the world didn’t yet—what so many of us today still don’t know. They knew the secrets of the Kingdom of heaven. They knew the hope of a life in eternity with Jesus.

Because of that, they had a call on their lives to share those secrets with others. To not keep them to themselves, but rather, to share them with the world so that others might know the Kingdom of heaven to come.

Today, as Christ’s disciples in our world, this same call is on our lives. We can hold the secrets of the Kingdom to ourselves, or we can invite others to take hold of them, too.

For now and for eternity, we can point others to the Kingdom of heaven.

A Prayer

Lord, help me to answer Your call to tell others about the Kingdom of heaven that awaits those who believe. As I believe and have followed you, You have revealed some of the secrets of Your ways. Give me words to share those with others so that they, too, might know You and walk forward toward the Kingdom of heaven that is waiting for us one day.
