How Praying for Your Husband Changes You

DAY 1 OF 5

Prayer changes your language

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Do you remember this saying? I remember chanting it when I was younger, but I realized that words hurt as I got older. Looking back over my marriage, I often wonder why it took me so long to realize that if words hurt me, my words hurt my husband. I used my words to manipulate my husband and even God. My prayers were a running list of things I didn’t like about my husband. I never asked God for His will or thoughts regarding my husband. I had to get out of the way and start declaring God’s word over my marriage and husband. Even if, naturally I didn’t see it, my faith had to be the conduit for change to occur. I couldn’t allow my natural eyes to deter me from God’s promise.

Have you ever started praying about everything you saw wrong in your husband but later realized you were speaking death, instead of life, over your marriage? As I started opening my heart, during prayer, to pray for my husband, God transformed my heart. I laid aside fear and even entitlement. I even started praying for God to heal the emotional wounds I may have caused with my words.

You can change what you see when you change what you say. Your prayers threaten Satan. He’s afraid that if you realize the power of your words, you’ll use them to declare God’s will over your marriage, and you will no longer succumb to his lies. Allow God’s word to live in your heart; out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Practical application: Take a moment to answer these questions,

What is the motive of my words and prayers?

Will my words make my husband bitter or better?

Would God be pleased with my words?

Pray this prayer:

Father, I lay aside my agenda. I embrace my identity as my husband’s prayer warrior. Please give me freshness in seeing who he is in you. I choose to affirm, not hurt. I choose to allow your love to speak through my words. Please help me to control my words and use them to build up my husband. Today, I declare I will be intentional about what I say to You and my husband, in Jesus' Name. Amen
