Scripture
Apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
Summary
This verse means at least two things: 1) Apart from God, we literally wouldn't exist. He is holding us together right now. We literally can do nothing apart from the animating, empowering, constantly-creating Spirit of Yahweh that is giving us the ability to breathe, think, and even exist in this very moment. We should never be prideful, whatsoever. Apart from God, we wouldn't even be here.
2) This verse also means that apart from God we can do nothing of eternal significance. If we operate in our own strength, we end up wasting our time, talent, and energy with no spiritual impact. God's Spirit is the One who does the heavy lifting in our ministry. If we want to see real fruit, we must rely completely on Him.
Discussion Questions
1. Is it an overstatement to say apart from God we can do nothing? Why or why not?
2. How does this verse apply to our worship team? To you as a team member?
3. Is there a story of a time you did things in your own strength? Share.
4. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?
Closing Prayer
God, we are utterly dependent upon you. Our thoughts, our minds, our strength, physical space and time...you give it all. We wouldn't exist without you. Help us to remember this always. When we get up on stage to serve, help us not to serve in our own strength. Help us to lean completely on you, your Spirit, your power, and the strength that you provide. Please work through us as we rely completely on you. May you be glorified. In Jesus' name. Amen.
