THE ROOTS OF PRAYER
We want to set up your year well, with strong roots of prayer, sowing the seeds of the Word into good soil and being a steward that produces good fruit. We are going to talk about our prayer life; why do we pray and how can we set up a devotional life this year that prioritises prayer?
A person without prayer is like a tree without roots.
Simply put, prayer is communicating with God. In our times of prayer, we share our hopes, feelings, thoughts and fears with God, we pray for others, and we get guidance from the Holy Spirit on our steps and heart. God wants us to draw near to Him since the cornerstone of every strong relationship means talking to each other — honestly and frequently!
It’s not about fancy words, it’s about being honest and real with God. He is the one who has all the answers, who created the universe, who heals us, saves us, sets us free wants to have a relationship with us.
Prayer is about abiding in Christ.
Prayer isn’t about a list of things we need, it’s about abiding in communion with God. As you abide, you are able to pray about the things that are on God’s heart. Talking to God – keeps you in Him.
The Bible tells us to pray.
In Romans 12:12, Ephesians 6:18, Philippians 4:16 and Colossians 4:2, God is so in love with us and so desires a relationship with humanity, that He requests us in His Word to pray. Jesus prayed fervently and regularly, if Jesus prayed how much more should we? (Matthew 14:23-24, Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16)
In Matthew 6:5-13, Jesus gave us a great model on how to pray, beginning with praise, focusing on the Kingdom, praying for others and ourselves it’s all there, check it out! Also, don’t forget that if you don’t know what to pray about, ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and to pray through you. (Romans 8:26)
Scripture: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." - John 15:1-8
Prayer Point: Lord, this year I pray that you would help me to take the next step in my prayer life. Help me to set up a time of prayer where you and I can chat each day, where my heart is set towards your Kingdom, praying for others and giving you the burdens of my heart. Let me have deep roots of prayer in my life this year.
