Daily Bible Reading, January 2023 - God’s Saving Word: Unity in Christ JesusChikamu
January 22
Introduction
People bring their children to Jesus for a blessing, but the disciples rebuke them. A rich man approaches Jesus, inquiring about what he must do to receive eternal life.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 19:13-30
Today’s Key Verse: Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Reflect
Recall yesterday’s reading about Jesus using a child as an example when teaching about humbling oneself (Matthew 18:2-5).In today’s reading, how does the story of Jesus blessing children (verses 13-15) reinforce the lesson from yesterday? The rich young man in today’s reading was most likely someone who possessed not only wealth but also power and status. It may be that he gained his wealth through taxes, interest, or similar means that caused others to remain poor. Why did the rich young man go away sad? In your understanding, what does it means to follow Jesus?
Pray
Lord Jesus, I want to be your disciple and to serve you. Teach me to be obedient to your will and to obey your commandments. Open my eyes and heart to the needs of others. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Acts 3:1-26: Peter heals a lame beggar.
