Presidential Inaugurations And The Bible

DAY 3 OF 9

Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the U.S.

For his second swearing-in ceremony in 1949, Harry S. Truman used the same Bible he was sworn in on in 1945, opened to Matthew 5:3-11. He also used a copy of a Gutenberg Bible given to him by the Independence, Missouri Chamber of Commerce, open to the Ten Commandments in Exodus.

About this Plan

Presidential Inaugurations And The Bible

While not required by the Constitution, the Bible has been used at nearly every single presidential inauguration since Abraham Lincoln. This eye-opening 9-day plan will show you just how deeply the Bible has impacted this famous American political event. You’ll see some of the Bibles and verses presidents chose for their swearing-in ceremonies and how they incorporated the words of the Bible into their inaugural addresses in order to articulate their vision to the American people.
