The Four Agreements

ZUVA 1 REMAZUVA 4

Like you, I’ve been a wisdom seeker and searcher for a long, long, time. Most of that time, I was focused on Earthly wisdom. This led me to read the popular book, The Four Agreements.

If you haven’t read the book The Four Agreements it is a secular self-help book based on shamanism.

For some reason recently, I was drawn to read through it again.

While reading it, I felt God showing me where these Four Agreements were coming from, and it was all in the scriptures.

I got excited, and in awe of God’s wisdom and direction. This is my prayer for you, and why I’m so excited to share these truths with you.

You are making agreements with yourself by design or by default.

Most never become aware of the agreements they create or their outcomes. This leads to a frustrating and disgruntled life.

I know because I once lived this way, and I want to share with you Biblical principles designed to guide you into an authentic life of freedom.

Sounds too good to be true right?

I want to challenge you to take a breath, and invite the Holy Spirit into your day right now.

He is your counselor and guide. Enter into His presence with thanksgiving. The Holy Spirit wants to meet with you. Set your thoughts and ways on Him. Expect a miraculous moment.

This devotional and this moment is exactly what you have prayed for. This is a synchronic event meant for you.

As you and I spend some time together, my greatest desire for you is to become aware and draw closer to the Lord. The Bible says in James 4:8, “draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

Agreement #1 is to be free from fault or blame with your words.

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

The entire universe was created with words. Jesus used his words to heal the sick, cast out demons, and forgive sinners. If you study the words of Jesus it’s clear to see His words were without fault or blame.

Think about the types of words you use in your own life? What about the types of words you say to yourself?

I’ll never forget the moments when I would make minor mistakes and I would vomit toxicity to myself by saying, “You’re an idiot. You are so stupid. You never get it right.”

In those moments, I was literally choosing death over my life. I was making powerful agreements with my own words over my life.

These agreements are what I am referring to. Think about how many times in your life your words have been negative, and debilitating to your growth?

Even though you know you are not any of these words, you continue to use these words against yourself. You make agreements with yourself against yourself. These agreements are powerful whether you use them for good or bad.

In Ephesians 4:29 it says, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Your words and agreements are not just for other people, but this verse says, “to those who hear.” This includes you.

Think about in your own life if your words are giving grace to those who listen? Are you giving grace to others? Are you giving grace to yourself?

Many of you may remember the infamous boxer, Muhammed Ali. One of the things he was most famous for was his positive self-talk. I love watching old clips of Muhammed Ali yelling to the media, “I am the greatest.”

Muhammed Ali was deploying a Biblical principle and using the power of words to his advantage. He ultimately became a world champion boxer.

What’s important to note is the formula is right in the Bible. Let me give you another powerful scripture in Proverbs 16:24 which says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Think about the words and agreements you are making in your soul (relationships) and in your body?

What words do you say to your physical body?

What words do you say to your relationships or about strangers?

Are your words full of grace?

Are you finding sweetness in your soul and health in your body? If not, become aware of the words and agreements you are making.

Let me leave you with one last thing to consider when it comes to your words and agreements. I want to talk about gossip.

Psalms 101:5 says, “Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure.”

Gossip is unconfirmed reports about other people. Gossip is an addictive drug feeding the ego. There is no grace in it. There is no life in it. There is no love in it.

If you want to be free from fault and blame in your life, you must decide to eliminate gossip. Gossip must be fully eradicated and forgiveness installed.

I want to challenge you to reflect for a moment and ask yourself, what gossip do you need forgiveness for?

Is there anyone you need to ask forgiveness from?

I want to inspire you to use your words to bring life. Speak to yourself and re-write your agreements with words of life and power. Create daily habits and reminders of what the Bible says about you.

If you want growth, and freedom in your life, begin by changing the agreements you have made with your words. Choose life. Choose grace. Choose love.

Never forget what Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.”

Let me know what resonated with you the most?

Rooting for you.
