“God got on the floor”
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. (Philippians 2:5-7)
Let’s say there was an astronomer who spent all his days thinking about space. And this astronomer understands that it takes 4.5 years for light to reach the Earth from the nearest star. He understands it takes over 30,000 years for light to reach this Earth from the farthest point in the Milky Way.
This astronomer also has a 3-year-old son. It’s close to Christmas, so he gets down on the floor with his son. He has been dealing with all of these astronomical figures in all of interstellar space, but he gets down on the floor with his small son and talks about Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Christmas carols, and presents.
Does this astronomer lose his stature as a scholar and scientist because he got on the floor with a child? I don’t think so. I don’t think a dad stands any taller than when he gets on the floor with a child!
In a sense, that is what God did. On that very first Christmas, He got down on the floor with us by sending Jesus. God came down to our level to teach us, lead us, and show us how to live. And He promises to continue walking with us today by His Sprit if we’ll follow Him.
