Moments for Mums: Refuge - Part 1Chikamu
David longs to take refuge under the shelter of God’s “wings”. The metaphor may be taken two ways. The image that immediately springs to mind is of a mother bird protecting her chicks. However, David may also have been referring to the wings of the cherubim that spread over the seat of mercy in the tabernacle. Both are pictures of God’s love and grace.
David, a grown man, a strong king, and a soldier, was not ashamed to seek and receive gentle nurture from God.
Matthew 23:37 records that Jesus longs to draw us under his wings “as a hen gathers her brood”. Jesus invites us into his protection. At the same time, he models mothering to us! He assures us that we are loved and forgiven.
The mercy and grace of Jesus are freely given. This makes it both important and possible for us to love and forgive others.
Question
Have you found that it’s easier to forgive others when you think about how Jesus has forgiven you?
Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, for being a gentle protector. Please make me aware of my mother’s “wings” for showing unconditional love and forgiveness within my family. Amen.
