Victory Over Your Sugar Cravings

DAY 3 OF 5

Change Your Wanter

I know you thought this challenge was going to be all about sugar, but I promise you the messages I am sharing, and the daily challenges will ALL help you to make the changes you know you need to make when it comes to sugar. The problem is so many people just make the claim “I won’t eat sugar!!” but they never go deep enough to figure out what could be causing them to cave to their sugar cravings.

Do not turn to sugar for comfort or joy. Instead, turn to God. That is the only way to find true joy! Sugar is a short-term “high” but lasting comfort comes from God.

Never forget you are God’s child, perfectly made.  There is nothing “wrong” with you, he sees you as perfect and whole.   Psalm 139:13-14: “for it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been fearfully and wonderfully made”.

If you are trying to kick the sugar habit and lose weight to gain other’s love…you are setting yourself up for failure.  Other people’s love and adoration will not sustain you when temptations come!  Instead, you need to root yourself in God’s love.  You are already fully loved by God! Use that love to care for your body.

You need to believe that you are loved by God, and He created you perfectly so that you care for this body that He so lovingly created.  You need to stand up and say, “I don’t want to turn to sugar anymore because I know that is not being loving to my body.”  You are doing this because you love yourself.  You are beautiful and God does not care about the size of your body.  But you do need to take care of the body He gave you.  You are fully loved and fully made!  Use that love as the fuel that consistently gets you to make healthy choices and to free yourself from your sugar cravings.

As part of loving and taking care of the body God gave you, get at lease 20 minutes of exercise each day. A recent study in the UK suggests that a short workout can, in fact, improve self-control and reduce sugar cravings.  The role of endorphins to regulate appetite and control food intake is complicated.  However, this study has proven that higher levels of endorphins regulate the appetite and control cravings.

Prayer:

Lord, I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that.  Thank You so much that You declare I am enough. I’m so grateful that I belong to You, and that You alone are the only one that I need to impress.  Give me strength to love and fight for the body.  Help me to want You more when I am looking for comfort or pleasure and not turn to sugar. Amen

Challenge:

1. Think about your “Wanter” – ask God to help you want Him more when you look for comfort. When you change your “wanter” it makes it easier to seek good health long term. You’ll find it easier and easier to get off that sugar.

2. Take time each day to do some sort of exercise.  It may be going for a walk, doing some gardening or something more intense.  Keep the body that God lovingly gave to you in shape and ready for what He has in store for you.
