Like a MotherChikamu
But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. (Psalm 131:2)
When my daughter was a baby, she nursed at night until she was 18 months old. It was a long stretch of getting up in the night to feed her. After she was weaned, she still woke up at night for a little while, but was content just to be held and rocked until she went back to sleep. She didn't need food, or a clean diaper, she just needed a little extra time to be rocked and held. She was content just to be with me. Getting up at night wasn't easy, but rocking her calmed my spirit too.
This is just what the psalmist describes in Psalm 131. Like a child, he will not occupy himself with things too big for his comprehension. Like a weaned child, he isn't coming to God to get his needs met, he does not need to understand the nature of God. Instead, he is just resting in God's presence, comforted and calmed.
My daughter is long past the baby stage, but at times she still needs my presence.I sometimes have to remember to stop and just be with her. I am not a perfect parent, and I don't always offer this perfectly, but I do know the comfort that comes for both of us when I can.
I am long past the baby stage in my Christian life too, but at times, I also need to just rest in God's warm embrace. For me, that comes through taking quiet devotional time in the whirl of my busy life.
If you need that today, I encourage you to take time to rest in God's presence. Open your heart, and let God calm and quiet your soul.

About this Plan
The Bible repeatedly uses words and imagery that describe God caring for his people like a mother. These images are both a comfort and an inspiration as we mother our own children. This 3 day series, presented by Words of Hope, celebrates God's fierce and tender love, and our own motherhood too.
