Run Light

I crouch into position and nestle my feet into the blocks. My heart is pounding so heavy I can hear it echo in my ears. I still my breath. “On your marks,” The starter cries in a booming voice. BANG! The gun goes off and I run! The cries of the spectators fade into a muffled hum and those around me become a haze. All I see is the white chalk that marks my lane and the finish line that beckons me. I loved to run.

Believe it or not, maintaining my concentration in school was no easy feat. In fact, my teachers probably deserve a medal for tolerating me and aside from lunch, very few activities captured my attention quite like athletics. I was a sprinter and I loved it. I recall one of my training drills involved being harnessed to a truck tire and made to run. This was not overly enjoyable. It was heavy, it was restrictive and it was slow. I did not like slow. However, the benefit of such a drill wasn’t evident until the harness was removed and the tire was set aside. The comparative freedom made it feel like I was flying, my feet were light and nothing could slow me down!

Our faith walk is not so different. We often struggle in our own strength, under the weight of our shortcomings and battle against the things of our past that hold us tethered. It’s not always easy revealing the burdens we’ve born and the sins we’ve carried but when we come to God, set those things aside and wait on Him, He meets us there. He renews our strength, He lifts us and sets us at our starting mark and urges us to set our eyes on Jesus and run.

Pray With Me

Father God, forgive me for the times I have fallen and loosen me from the things that hold me down. I lay my burdens at Your feet and I thank You that in You I am free. Amen.

Key Memory Verse

Isaiah 40:31, "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
