DAY 2 OF 5

How Is Your Offensive Line?

The offensive line doesn’t get much attention from the average football fan. Although they’re usually underrated, their role is one of the most important on the field. Teams with a reliable and strong offensive line protect their quarterback while allowing him to confidently stand in the pocket.

Recently, however, quarterbacks have been regularly getting hit and dealing with tons of pressure. There have been countless discussions about poor offensive line play being the key reason for injuries and teams struggling.

Factors such as blame on the college’s spread offense, a lack of practice during training camp, and teams not scouting the right skillsets may have contributed to the decline in the level of offensive line play. Whatever the reasons, there’s no denying the importance of teams emphasizing improvement in this crucial area.

What would it look like if we placed value on having our own “offensive line” to protect us and keep us from getting knocked down? The people we choose to surround ourselves with (friends, family, mentors, co-workers, and advisers) can help our success by providing a consistent and reliable “offensive line.”

The reality is, we all face opponents daily and deal with the pressure that potentially sacks us. When we recognize the value of consistent "offensive line play,” we will seek others to help us stay upright and watch our blindside.

As we consider people to protect us and stand with us, let’s look at the book of wisdom in the Bible. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

Proverbs 24:6 declares, “So don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisers.”

As followers of Jesus, we’re not meant to be alone in life so let’s make sure we’re standing in the pocket with confidence, and surrounded by a solid “offensive line.” Let’s fill our lives with wise advisers and friends who are willing to keep us upright and help us fight against the opponent.

I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I’m thankful You speak wisdom through others. Help me accept protection and advice from them so I don’t get knocked down. Lead me to the right people to fellowship with. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
