Hearing God Through the Year

DAY 23 OF 24

The Crucible of Soul Making

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:37 (NIV)

Sometimes we are given a word from God and are sure of it, but the events indicated do not come to pass. This is often because others involved may not know the will of God or may not do it. And God may not override them.

Our world is the crucible of soul making, in which we can still remain always certain of inevitable triumph, “more than conquerors.” The will of God made plain to us is sometimes not fulfilled because of the choices of other people. We must not, because of that, lose confidence in God’s guiding words.

PRAYER: Review with God those requests you have prayed for many years, which have not turned out as you wished (or as you believe God wishes). Consider that others may not have cooperated. Ask God to show you ways in which you are “more than a conqueror” in spite of this disappointment.

About this Plan

Hearing God Through the Year

Dallas Willard urged us to learn and practice prayer as a two-way dialogue with God. These excerpts from his best-selling book Hearing God, assembled by Jan Johnson, are an invitation to meet God, to allow his voice to shape your choices, and to encourage your heart. As you begin this four-week reading plan, thank God that he promises to meet you wherever you are in your faith journey.
