This Little Light: An Advent Devotional

DAY 4 OF 5

Verse: Outside in the dark, Lord

Theme: Love

We recently set up the Christmas tree at our house. Our friends were here visiting, and they helped us set it up and decorate. Their five-year-old daughter helped us put up ornaments. Finally, when it was all done, she stepped back and marveled at the finished product. To see the twinkle of the lights reflected in her eyes was magical. Those tiny glimmers in the dark sea of her blue eyes looked just like night stars in the sky. But the wonder in her eyes was the most memorable thing. As I watched my friend's daughter gaze upon our newly decorated tree, I remembered that the reason I wanted to write this devotional was in part to inspire wonder once again.

What is it about the Christmas season that ignites that child-like wonder in all of us? For children, it must seem like an eternity to wait a whole year for Christmas to come. But when it arrives with all its spectacle, cheer, decorations, treats, and gifts, their imagination and amazement are immediately ignited. For those of us who have grown out of it, this devotional is a recalibration of sorts. I named this devotional after a song I once sang as a child. In my research and study, it became clear that the song was more than a Sunday school melody. It was a reminder to us all of the light that resides inside our hearts. Our lives are a beacon, but like a fire without fuel, we will grow dim the farther we move away from the source.

I hope that in this season, we will draw near with the awe of a child. Let us set our eyes once again on the light of the world, the Christ child, whose very birth is wrapped in mystery and miracle. May we look to the past, remembering those who've gone before us, hoping against hope for a coming Kingdom and a Messiah who would reign with peace and justice. As we prepare our hearts and homes to receive family, friends, and neighbors this holiday, may we extend to them the same love we have received. And lastly, let us carry peace and joy wherever we go and to whoever may cross our paths.

Poking A Hole in the Veil: As the last line of the song "This Little Light of Mine" goes, "Outside in the dark, I'm gonna let it shine." Let this be a reminder that wherever we go and whoever we come in contact with, we carry the light of Christ. It will look different for each one of us, for we are all fearfully and wonderfully made (unique if you will). So may your unique expression of the love of Christ shine like the stars above. May it awaken wonder in you and bring you peace.

About this Plan

This Little Light: An Advent Devotional

This Little Light Is a 5-day devotional loosely based on the song of the same name. It focuses on the idea that every creative act is a light signaling to future generations the power of hope amidst the dark. Each day I will provide you with an opportunity for reflection along with a visual meditation from my own time reflecting on the advent season.
