Creating a Better NormalChikamu
An Abundance Mindset
Most of us get a little nervous and sweaty when the topic of money comes up. But what if we don’t have to? What if we can create a better normal for our finances? The thing is, money is one of the greatest tools God can use to grow our faith and trust in Him. So, money isn’t a topic to avoid; it’s a tool to embrace.
Money itself is just a resource. But it’s our mindset about our money that makes all the difference. Sometimes we’re tempted—especially during a crisis—to find security in our money. We think we just need an emergency fund or to hoard months of supplies. But no amount of money in the bank or supplies on our shelves can remove our fear or give us peace. Only Jesus can do that.
As Christians, we shouldn’t be hoarding and storing resources. Instead, we can share our resources generously with others. Now, don’t get it twisted. It’s important to be a good steward of our resources, and we should be wise with how we spend and save money. But we don’t put our trust in money. We put our full trust in God, knowing that He is our ultimate Provider.
When we think about money, we often worry about running out of it or not having enough—a scarcity mindset. But as Jesus followers, we’re called to have an abundance mindset. Just look at what Scripture says about that:
The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. Proverbs 11:24 MSG
When we focus on what we lack, we’ll always want more. We’ll never be satisfied. But when we focus on what we have, we realize we have more than enough. Let’s not be tempted to control our finances. Instead, let’s recognize that we serve a good God who takes care of us.
Pray: God, I often find myself tempted to place my security in my finances. Forgive me for that. Instead, help me fully trust in You as my Provider. Give me the wisdom to know how to steward the resources You have generously given me, and show me opportunities to be generous to others. I trust You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge: Consider these questions. Is your mindset about money one of scarcity or abundance? Does your budget reflect that? Talk about it with some trusted friends.
