Thought:

Important people often arrive with a big parade. Kings may ride into a city on their finest horse surrounded by their people and with trumpets blasting. (Think of Prince Ali from Disney’s Aladdin.) But Jesus—the King of the Universe—chose to ride into Jerusalem on the back of an untrained donkey colt. There was no more humble way for Him to enter. Jesus is a different kind of king. He is a King who puts His people before Himself. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people shouted, “Hosanna!” Hosanna is a shout of praise to God. They praised Jesus because they knew He had come to save them. The gospel is welcomed with glad shouts of joy!

1. What odd thing did Jesus ask the disciples to do? What happened when they did it?

2. How did Jesus enter Jerusalem?

3. How did the people react when Jesus rode into Jerusalem?

4. What did Jesus do when He got to Jerusalem?

Engage:

Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with shouts of joy because He is good news. We have that same good news—Jesus came to save us! We should offer our thanks and praise to God. We should celebrate what God has done for us in Jesus. Spend a few minutes telling God why you are thankful for the gospel. You can say it out loud, pray it in your heart, write it down, draw a picture, or thank God in any other form you enjoy!

Deeper Waters:

We celebrate the triumphant entry of Jesus on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. Why do you think that week in particular is a good time to reflect on Mark 11:1-11?
