Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of Faith

ZUVA 23 REMAZUVA 31

May 23

Introduction

Yesterday’s reading informed us that Samson was chosen to rescue Israel from the Philistines (13:5) and that the LORD’s power began to strengthen him (13:25). In contrast to other judges, Samson never leads an army, and his feuds are motivated by personal revenge rather than by a desire to rescue the Israelites from hostile neighbors. Samson was attracted to non-Israelite women. Marriage with foreigners was forbidden throughout much of Israel’s history because such marriages could lead to worshiping foreign gods (Deuteronomy 7:3, 4). In today’s reading, Samson marries a Philistine woman. During the wedding banquet, he makes a bet with thirty young men and asks them if they can solve a riddle.

Today’s Scripture: Judges 14:6a

Suddenly the power of the LORD made Samson strong.

Today’s Reading

Judges 14:1-20

Reflect

When Samson expresses his desire to marry a Philistine woman, verse 4 states that the LORD “was leading Samson to do this.” Why? What is the riddle he poses to the thirty young men at the wedding banquet? How does Samson’s wife trick him into revealing the answer? What are your thoughts about his killing thirty men in Ashkelon to pay off his debt?

Pray

Lord God, empower me with your Holy Spirit and strengthen me to serve you. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
