The Proverbs of Solomon
1 # See ch. 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon.
# See ch. 29:3 A wise son makes a glad father,
# ch. 17:25; 29:15 but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
2 # [ch. 21:6; Ezek. 7:19; Luke 12:19, 20] Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
# ch. 11:4, 6 but righteousness delivers from death.
3 #
Ps. 34:9, 10; 37:25; [Matt. 6:33] The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
# [Ps. 112:10; James 4:3] but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4A slack hand #[ch. 6:11; 12:24; 13:4] causes poverty,
# ch. 21:5 but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5He who #[ch. 6:8] gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is #ch. 17:2; 19:26a son who brings shame.
6Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but #ver. 32the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.#10:6 Or but violence covers the mouth of the wicked; also verse 11
7 #
Ps. 112:6 The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but #[Ps. 9:5]the name of the wicked will rot.
8 # [Matt. 7:24, 25] The wise of heart will receive commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
9 # ch. 3:23; 28:18; Ps. 23:4; Isa. 33:15, 16 Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who makes his ways crooked #[Matt. 10:26; 1 Tim. 5:25]will be found out.
10Whoever #ch. 6:13winks the eye causes trouble,
and a babbling fool will come to ruin.
11 #
Ps. 37:30 The mouth of the righteous is #ch. 13:14; Ps. 36:9 a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked #[See ver. 6 above]conceals violence.
12Hatred stirs up strife,
but #1 Pet. 4:8; [James 5:20]love covers all offenses.
13On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
but #ch. 19:29; 26:3 a rod is for the back of him who #See ch. 6:32lacks sense.
14The wise #[ver. 8; ch. 12:23] lay up knowledge,
but #ch. 18:7the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
15 # ch. 18:11; [Ps. 52:7; Mark 10:24, 25] A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
the poverty of the poor is their ruin.
16The wage of the righteous leads #ch. 11:19; 19:23to life,
the gain of the wicked to sin.
17Whoever heeds instruction is on #[ch. 6:23]the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever utters slander is a fool.
19 # [Matt. 12:36, 37] When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
# ch. 17:27; [James 3:2] but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
20The tongue of the righteous is #ch. 8:19; 16:16choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
21The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for #[Hos. 4:6]lack of sense.
22 # [Gen. 24:35; 26:12; Deut. 8:18] The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.#10:22 Or and toil adds nothing to it
23Doing wrong is #ch. 2:14; 15:21 like a joke to a fool,
but #[ch. 8:30]wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
24 #
Isa. 66:4; Heb. 10:27; [Job 15:21] What the wicked dreads #Job 3:25 will come upon him,
but #Ps. 145:19; Matt. 5:6; 1 John 5:14, 15the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25When #[Job 21:18; Ps. 58:9]; See Matt. 7:26, 27 the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
but #ch. 12:3; Ps. 15:5; [Matt. 7:24, 25]the righteous is established forever.
26Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 # See ch. 3:2 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
# See Job 15:32, 33 but the years of the wicked will be short.
28 # [Luke 21:28] The hope of the righteous brings joy,

29 # [Ps. 25:12; Matt. 22:16; Acts 9:2] The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,
but destruction to evildoers.
30 # ver. 25; Ps. 37:22, 29; 125:1 The righteous will never be removed,
but #ch. 2:21, 22the wicked will not dwell in the land.

but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
