Reading With the People of God #11 Blessed

DAY 3 OF 31

Focus of the month: (The Beatitudes)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Matthew 5:3-12

The Radical Nature of Repentance

Today we will see the second Beatitude as it reveals the deep contrition over sin. A similar idea can be seen in Paul’s thought in 2 Corinthians 7:10: “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret.” It can also include grief caused by the various circumstances of life. The word “mourn” describes the emotion expressed by Jacob when told that Joseph was dead (Gen. 37:34). It is evident that our culture does not know how to mourn biblically. One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to bring comfort (The Comforter). The comfort is “now” and “not yet.” Forgiveness of sin is a present reality for those who are brokenhearted over sin. But “God will wipe away all tears” when the Kingdom is consummated.

In the third Beatitude the word “meek” connotes gentleness of strength and disciplined energy. The meek person is not defensive or self-important. This person is teachable and submissive to the proper authority. The repentant person submits to the rule of the King. One thing I tried to teach my children and now my students is: When you go to any new place, find who the authority is and submit to him/her. This honors God and will be an example for others to follow. Repentance is not a one-time act, but a lifestyle!
