Day 2) He Renews Them With Purpose
Three Points About Purpose
1) Salvation Clarifies It
When Paul welcomed Onesimus, his identity shifted from slave to friend—similar to what happens when we place our faith in Jesus. In that moment, Onesimus began to serve and support Paul, just as we naturally respond by serving and supporting the work of Christ when He welcomes us into His family!
2) Relationship Fuels It
Onesimus' service to Paul was initiated by Paul's decision to befriend him. In the same way, the incredible relationship we have with Jesus, and by extension His church, should fuel a desire to share His message with the world.
3) Serving Embodies It
What is at the core of walking in God-given purpose? Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, humbled Himself to serve humanity, going so low as to wash His followers' feet and die for them on a Roman cross. If you know you’re a runaway, at odds with the will of your master, the natural response to encountering His love and forgiveness is to serve those around you.
Big Idea
Our purpose is clarified when we place our faith in Jesus. Just as Onesimus' transformation led him to serve Paul, our relationship with Jesus will stir in us a desire to serve others, embodying the purpose God has given us through His love and grace.
Let’s Think About This:
Question 1) How has your identity been transformed through salvation, and how does that transformation clarify your purpose in life?
Question 2) Our primary mission is to spread the message of Jesus to the world, and God has given each of us specific gifts to aid in that effort. What are some specific gifts and talents God has given you that can help you fulfill this mission?
Question 3) What are some practical ways we can serve our community and beyond?

In The Runaway Bible study, we will take a closer look at the book of Philemon and explore four ways Jesus responds to runaways. Prayerfully, as we walk through this small letter together, we will gain a deeper understanding of God’s indescribable love for those who have chosen to run away from Him—including us!
