DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4: Taking a Step Back to Move Forward

The act of pausing before starting a new activity may seem counterintuitive, however, it is precisely this intentional pause where we find clarity for our next steps. In the previous days, we explored the importance of slowing down, letting go of control, and redesigning our rhythm. Now, it’s time to reflect and ask: how can we put these insights into practice?

Taking a step back doesn’t just mean stopping, but taking the time to reflect and recalibrate our direction. Pausing before a new beginning means asking ourselves, “Am I building my life on my plans or on God’s?” Often, we associate change with a “doing” mentality, with endless to-do lists and strategic plans, but God invites us to stop, listen to His voice, and seek His counsel before acting: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

For example, before Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, he was commanded to meditate on God’s Word day and night (Joshua 1:8). He wasn’t asked to move immediately but to pause and strengthen himself spiritually to receive the right guidance. This is what happens when we dedicate time to prayer, meditation, and reflection.

So, what does it mean to take a step back in practical terms?

Create Your "Sacred Space": Don’t let distractions invade every moment of your day. Find a place and time — whether at home, outdoors, or in a quiet corner — where you can dedicate time solely to God. Write in a journal, read your Bible, and reflect on what the Lord wants to say to you today.

Slow Down in Saying Yes: Before accepting a new commitment, pray about it. Ask God if it is aligned with the calling He has placed on your heart, and if it doesn’t, trust that He has a better opportunity in the works.

Set a Monthly Review: At the end of each month, take time to examine key areas of your life (work, family, relationships, physical and spiritual health) and reflect on questions such as: Am I in alignment with God? Am I building according to His guidance or just following my own aspirations?

This review process allows you to make necessary adjustments and free yourself from things that do not align with His plans

Reflective Questions:

  • What does "taking a step back" mean to me today?
  • How can I create time and space to seek God's guidance before making an important decision?

Prayer: Lord, as I face a new beginning, I stop and recognize that You are the architect of my path. My fears, dreams, and choices are in Your hands. Teach me not to rush but to make room for Your guidance, listening to Your voice in the calm. Help me trust Your plan, even when I don’t see everything clearly. I face the new things that come my way, knowing that You are my support, and in You, I find strength and direction to move forward. Amen.

About this Plan

EquipHer Vol. 11: "Stepping Back: The Most Powerful Step Forward!"

New beginnings often find us filled with enthusiasm and determination, but they can also trap us into frantic rhythms and pressures that, over time, prove to be exhausting. In this plan, we will explore the value of slowing down and discovering how God-guided rest helps us to see His plan more clearly and live aligned with His purpose for us.
