Journey With Jesus 365Vzorec

"In the beginning" refers to the start of this universe and the time before it. The first three words in John’s Gospel mirror the first three words in Genesis. These opening verses in John align with the events described in the first chapter of Genesis. Jesus was present at creation and played an active role. When God said, “Let us make man” (Genesis 1:26), He included Himself, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is eternal, sharing the same divine nature as God the Father. This is why He could proclaim, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). He is the "Ancient of Days" described in Daniel 7:9-10, with white hair like wool, symbolizing His role as ruler and judge. All judgment has been entrusted to the Son.
When Jesus healed the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years—physically much older than He was—He addressed her as "daughter" (Matthew 9:22, Mark 5:34, Luke 8:48). This highlights His eternal existence; He is older than any human because He is God, eternal and uncreated. As John states in verse 2, “He was in the beginning with God.” Where God was before creation, Christ was there with Him.
Herschel Ford offers a thought-provoking observation: “Look how different the beginning of John’s Gospel is from the other three Gospels. Matthew begins with the genealogy of Christ, then tells of His conception and birth. Mark starts with Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist at age 30. Luke opens with the announcement of Christ’s birth and, like the physician he was, provides detailed accounts of the birth itself. But not John. He goes back to the very beginning—into all eternity. He presents Christ not as a baby in a manger, but as the second person of the Trinity, dwelling eternally with God the Father.”
Why is it significant that John begins his Gospel by emphasizing Jesus’ divinity rather than His earthly birth?
Reflect on the phrase “Before Abraham was, I am.” How does this declaration challenge or affirm your understanding of who Jesus is?
How can the eternal presence of Christ provide comfort and assurance in your personal walk of faith?
