Perfectly Loved: Embracing Imperfection in Our Children’s JourneySample
Day 3: Finding Hope Amidst Depression
Depression can cast a long shadow over a child’s life; however, Scripture provides hope and encouragement during these dark times. Psalm 34:18 (NIV) states: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse reassures us that even in moments of despair, God is near and attentive to our suffering.
The story of Elijah (1 Kings 19) serves as an important reminder of this truth. After experiencing great victories against false prophets, Elijah fell into deep despair when he felt threatened by Queen Jezebel’s wrath. He fled into the wilderness feeling hopeless and alone. However, God met him there—not with condemnation but with care—providing food and rest before addressing his spiritual needs.
As parents navigating this difficult terrain with your child, it’s essential to validate their feelings while also guiding them toward hope found in Christ. Encourage open dialogue about their emotions without judgment or dismissal. Help them find joy in small things each day—whether through nature walks or creative activities—and remind them regularly of God’s love and presence during tough times.
