DAY 18

The words “obey” and “submit” do not sound all that exciting. No child wants to obey his parents when told he cannot have dessert first. No adults want to submit to their bosses when told to work overtime. Obedience and submission are often difficult for everyone. But what if they were a gift given to us by God? What if our obedience and submission on earth lead us into a deeper relationship with our Father in heaven?

Notice how Hebrews 13:17 ends. If one does not choose obedience and submission with joy, “this would be unprofitable.”

Learning how to trust and follow earthly authority creates a greater capacity for faith within our hearts to trust and follow our ultimate authority – God in heaven.

Submitting to your husband or wife teaches you to serve your Bridegroom, who is Jesus. Submitting to a boss brings about the humility to choose God’s way over our own. Children learning to obey their parents helps them come under the authority of their heavenly Father.

In recognizing and respecting those in positions of leadership, we are bringing about His kingdom and His will on earth as it is in heaven.

1. Read Colossians 3:23. How would your heart change towards the leaders in your life if you viewed serving them as serving God?

2. What rhythms might you establish this year to pray over leaders at work, in church, and in the nation?
