Freedom

DAY 4 OF 7

The wall is gone

When I was a kid, I went to a camp where they explained to me that there was a big, endless wall that had no way under, over or around and that lay between me and God. This wall was called sin and there was only one way to solve the problem. Someone had to make a break in the wall. I remember thinking, that’s okay guys I can do it. It’ll be hard, but I’ll borrow my dad’s hammer, and I’ll work until I can get us through. What a sweet, innocent thought.

We all want to think that we can solve our own problems, but some problems in life are too big for us to solve alone. This is why I love reading Romans 8 – because it continues to minister to me, reminding me that there is freedom from condemnation. There is freedom to come to God. Jesus has broken the wall down and now we can come to God through Him. I don’t need to use my dad’s hammer and chip away at this problem. God made a way!

The thing that horrifies me the most about not being free is the thought of being kept away from those I love. I love my family, I love my friends, I love my dog, but more than any of them I love God. I’m so thankful that God sent Jesus to destroy the wall that existed between Him and me – so that I’m free to be in relationship with Him. In moments when I struggle to feel like I deserve that, this verse says clearly to me – the wall is gone. Why would I build something in its place (real or imagined)? The wall is gone. I’m free to be with Jesus. And so are you.
