King of the Millennium
During the coming golden age, Christ will rule over the nations of the earth from His throne in New Jerusalem, yet He will be utterly accessible to His people. This will be a glorious reality of His thousand-year reign!
How do we know this? In Revelation 21:3, John heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God” (NIV).
And Revelation 22:3 says, “The Throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him” (NIV).
Interestingly, the new earth will still be divided into nations, but all the leaders of the nations will maintain absolute allegiance to our Lord. We’ll be busy serving the Lord in a billion different ways, and the new earth will be productive. The Bible says about the city of New Jerusalem: “On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it” (Revelation 21:25–26 NIV).
The millennial earth will be verdant and prolific during the reign of Christ. But imagine the wealth and power awaiting us in eternity! That subject occupied Paul’s mind as he wrote the book of Ephesians. He said, “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace” (2:6–7 NIV).
Hebrews 9:15 promises us an eternal inheritance. Peter wrote that we are called into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade, kept in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4). We are heirs of God and coheirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).
In light of this, let’s look forward to the coming Golden Age and to the reign of our Lord and Savior, but let’s also look beyond it to our eternal home! As we do, let’s give all praise, glory, and honor to our everlasting Lord!
Dear Lord, help me to live today with a heart and mind focused on You, expectant of what you will do in my life both now and in the coming golden age. Amen.
