A Fine Sight to See

DAY 5 OF 5

You’re the Woman for the Job

Yesterday we talked about when God called Moses out of Midian and into the work of delivering the Israelites.

Given that, I feel like it’s important to point out what might be super obvious: just because God makes our next-steps clear doesn’t mean we’ll feel like we’re ready. Take a look at Moses after God calls his name (twice!): “[he] hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God” (Exodus 3:6 NRSV).

God’s holiness and our humanity seem so very incompatible at times, don’t they?

But after Moses hid his face, God shared his plan to get the Israelites out of captivity and “bring them up out of [Egypt] to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8).

Even still, Moses second-guessed his involvement in the Israelites’ deliverance: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11).

God had a promise, though, to assure him: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12).

It’s not so different with us. Sure, you and I are probably not going to be involved in leading God’s people out of captivity on the scale that Moses was. But in our own everyday efforts, we do have opportunities to point the people around us to “a good and broad land.” Maybe you’re an architect whose integrity and kindness reflect God’s character to your clients. Maybe you’re the neighbor who all the neighborhood kids love to visit because your house is a place where they know their whole selves are welcome.

God doesn’t need a single one of us to achieve his purposes. That was true even in the book of Exodus. God chose Moses to lead, but he could have delivered the Israelites on his own. Even now, though, he invites us to join him in extending love and compassion and healing and mercy to a hurting world. He invites us to use our voices to offer leadership and hope and grace and direction. Doing that work is a gift and a privilege.

Who are you? You’re a uniquely gifted child of God.

And however God invites you to use those gifts, one thing is for sure: he will be with you as you figure out what that looks like.

Watch and see.
