Jesus, Name Above All Names

DAY 4 OF 7

Jesus Christ

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1)

On important documents, you sometimes have to list your full birth name. Just to make sure that it is you, and not someone whose name looks like yours. Matthew emphatically states in his genealogy who he is talking about: "Jesus Christ, son of..." You could say that Jesus is the personal name and Christ/Messiah is the title of the Son of God.

In the New Testament, both names often appear together: Jesus Christ.

Christ means "anointed one"; it is a Greek translation of the Hebrew name Masjiiach: the Messiah. A priest, prophet or king was anointed in the Bible. This confirmed that he had been given a special task. Jesus is the God-anointed King who will save all who acknowledge Him. The prophecies about the Messiah to come were known in Israel and they looked forward to His coming. (Matthew 2:4; Matthew 16:16) Every new generation in Israel was taught about God's words and promises. Thus the promises of God were kept alive and looked forward to their fulfillment.

How important is it for you to carry God's words in your mind and heart?

Thank You Jesus, that You are a King who wants to establish peace between God and people, and among people.

About this Plan

Jesus, Name Above All Names

Jesus' earthly parents did not have to wonder over the Name they would give to the Child Mary was expecting. God Himself told them what they should name this Child: Jesus. But He bore other names as well. This reading plan helps you discover what Jesus' names reveal about Himself.
