Godly Self-Care

DAY 5 OF 7

Spending Your Soul

"Spending your soul" is used metaphorically and refers to expending or dedicating your deepest emotions, energy, or passion towards something. It implies giving your all, sometimes at a personal cost, whether it's in pursuit of a goal, in a relationship, or any endeavor that requires intense commitment. It suggests a level of profound investment that goes beyond mere physical effort, involving emotional and spiritual engagement as well.

There are times when you are deeply invested emotionally, mentally, or spiritually and are unaware of how it’s taxing your soul. Here are a few examples:

Being in relationships, whether romantic or platonic, where you give a lot of yourself emotionally. Or you pour yourself into work or a passion project to the point where it consumes your thoughts, time, and energy. If you are a caretaker, whether for family members or friends, you are quickly drained emotionally and mentally. Pursuing personal goals or dreams with such intensity that it affects your well-being, relationships, or overall balance in life. It's important to maintain self-awareness and balance to avoid unintentionally depleting yourself in ways that could be detrimental in the long run.

Determine what is driving your soul to rush, rush, rush then you will clearly see the basis of your decisions, your choices, and gain some wisdom. When we let our schedules get out of control, our souls suffer the most. Not to mention other things suffer like your relationship with God, your health, your marriage, your family, your attitude, and of course, your stress level. And when you’ve booked yourself so tight that you are rushing from thing to thing, you are submitting your soul to a tyrannical object, either the clock, or a calendar.

Self-care is giving God the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.

Schedule time for self-care activities just as you would for other commitments or responsibilities. Stay flexible and adjust to meet your evolving needs. How we treat our “extra” hours will be very telling in whether you will or won’t be in control of your life. Be kind to yourself and treat yourself with the same care and compassion you would offer to a loved one. By customizing your self-care plan you can effectively manage stress and prevent soul burnout. Regular reassessment of your needs ensures that you remain present, relevant, and effective, especially as you navigate life's ups and downs.
