DAY 2 OF 7

Humility: A Platform that Lasts for Eternity

Pride. It can be a terrible thing.

As men, we seem to have a built-in desire for recognition. We feel the need to be praised for the things we do or accomplish. Throughout the years, I have come to realize that this, for the most part, is built on the shaky platform of pride.

In John 2, Mary, Jesus, and the disciples are invited to a wedding. When the wine runs out, Mary asks Jesus to do something about the situation.

We know how this ends—Jesus turns the water into wine, and the celebration continues.

But it’s in the details where we see so much more.

Here is Jesus, God walking among His creation. Now He has an opportunity to publicly and loudly announce who He is. All He has to do is take credit for His power, and bingo! Everyone will be in awe!

But instead, He quietly instructs the servants to fill the jars with water and take some to the master of ceremonies.

Huh?

No grandeur? No showmanship?

This was an opportunity where Jesus could have shown off as He blessed the newlyweds with an amazing wedding gift!

Instead, He simply stands by as the bridegroom gets credit for something he didn’t do.

To be in the world but not of the world means that sometimes, we as men need to be comfortable with someone else getting the credit and praise as we watch from the crowd.

This is not easy!

But as Jesus did this, He accomplished so much more of His mission than just getting some momentary recognition.

“What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him” (John 2:11, NIV, emphasis added).

For Jesus, to be in the world but not of it meant to lay down any temporary need for credit and applause in order to build the Kingdom He was here to build.

He chose a platform of humility over pride.

And that’s a platform that will last for eternity.

Prayer: Jesus, I confess that I have carried pride in my heart and desires. Forgive me and help me to see where I can grow in humility. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: What is one area of pride you need to hold with an open hand and let Jesus change your heart about? Tell a friend and ask them to help you grow in that.

About this Plan

In the World/Not of the World

In this men's devotional, we'll tackle Jesus' famous theme that His followers are to be "in the world" but not "of the world" and look at how we can be more like Christ, who lived this out perfectly. Written by Brad Klassen of Crossview Church in Steinbach, Manitoba.
