Single Sister, You Matter

DAY 6 OF 7

Anna

The last single sister that we learn about on this journey is the only named prophetess in the New Testament, Anna.

Anna was married by age 14, which culturally was quite common in that era. She was only married for seven years until she was widowed at age 21. After tragedy struck in her life, Anna spent the rest of her days at the temple, day and night, fasting, praying, and worshipping. After experiencing such devastation, it is astonishing and challenging to see Anna dedicate her life to the Lord. We don’t know how she wrestled with her grief, whether she struggled to trust God with certain parts of her heart or threw herself at His feet seeking comfort. Either way, her actions show us that she chose to live a life of faith and sacrifice. As a prophetess, the Lord entrusted divine secrets and revealed wonders to her well before making them apparent to the world. Maybe this great intimacy with the Lord kept her going, giving her renewed purpose.

Not everyone is built for the path that Anna took, but those among us are called to a life solely focused on the Lord’s work, which may exclude family life. This might sound terrifying for many of us (certainly for me!), but for Anna, her purpose invigorated her. Even in her advanced years, she was mobile, articulate, alert, spiritually savvy, and unselfish.

When Anna encounters the infant Jesus in the temple, we see that her life is indeed overflowing with favour and grace. She begins to evangelise immediately.

A tough truth to swallow is that not all of us will get married. I believe that God Himself will strengthen those who find themselves on this path. The Father will draw them into his secret counsel and whisper wonders into their hearts. Your value and purpose are not tarnished by being single. Society may struggle to make room for you, but our Heavenly Father cherishes you and wants to partner with you as he continues to show us mercy on earth.

Prayer

Dear Lord, you know that it is the desire of my heart to be married and have a family of my own. But Lord if that is not your will for my life, I pray that you would give me the grace and strength to endure the waves of longing that are at times stronger than I can bear. Draw me into your sacred spaces and reveal to me the secrets of your heart. Open my eyes, Lord, to the plans and purposes you would have me walk in. In the end, may my life echo a testimony of your favour and grace over me and your love for all of humanity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
