What Matters Most (The Book of 2 Timothy)

DAY 6 OF 20

REFLECT

Taking a walk in the Monongahela National forest will immediately cause you to recognize it is a special place. Rivers and streams abundantly flow throughout the area, creating a biological diversity and complexity that is incomparable across the United States. It’s very easy to allow the details of this beautiful place to consume you as you hike or walk. One must stay on a marked trail or walk with a local who knows the area. If not, there is no doubt about it, you will get lost.

Have you heard the saying, “You can’t see the forest for the trees?” You probably know that it means you are so in tune with the details that you miss the big picture and, therefore, lose sight of the main objective.

Paul’s next word of advice to Timothy is a reminder not to get so caught up in the details that he misses the forest. He reminds him to be strong, stay on the path, and guide others in their faith, but be sure to keep Jesus as his commander for every step of the way. Paul knew how easy it was to get bogged down with specifics and forget to stay focused on what really matters.

In today’s culture, simply ordering a cup of coffee can potentially cause a preoccupation with details. Take a few moments to remember how much Jesus loves you and renew your focus on Him.

PRAY

Dear Jesus, thank you for your great love for me. Help me to center on your path and increase my awareness of distractions along the way today. Amen.
