The Power of a United Family Identity

DAY 3 OF 6

Day 3: Your Role Within Your Family’s Identity

We rejoice in the diversity each family member brings to our shared table.

It’s day 3 on this “Family Identity” journey, and we're finally diving into the topic of family! Why the delay? Because understanding the individual identities within your family is crucial; it's these unique identities that collectively shape your family’s identity. Embracing each person’s individuality is, in essence, embracing the identity of the entire family.

Here’s a great question to ask: What role does my identity have within my family’s identity?

Here’s what we know! The individual identity of each family member directly influences the collective identity of the family. Your distinct design—the attributes that define you—contributes to the overall composition of your family.

Paul beautifully illustrates this concept as a collective body of Christ, but let’s translate that into family dynamics. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul emphasizes the importance of every part of the human body, highlighting their unique functions that collectively ensure the body's proper operation. The same principle applies within your family.

Over time, your unique personality traits, interests, values, and life experiences are all deeply integrated into your family's identity. The strengths, passions, and gifts you bring deepen the shared identity of your family—they need you, but more importantly, they need the real you.

If, out of fear or lack of understanding, you compromise who you are to "fit in," your family misses out on the perspective and contributions God’s specifically gifted you and placed within your identity. The overall family identity diminishes without your whole, authentic self. It's similar to Paul's example in 1 Corinthians 12:15-27 where he mentions an ear not wanting to be part of the body because it’s not an eye—that’s the wrong perspective to have! Paul continues to emphasize that if the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?

Without you fully present in your family, who would bring the "you-ness?" Nobody! There’s only one you. Embracing your true self grants your family permission to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness within your home.

This is why it's crucial for families to create space for each member to live out their personal identity. Doing so not only strengthens the family but also ensures each member feels valued and accepted. As you grow in aligning with your God-given identity and calling, you positively impact your family, inspiring them to embrace their identities too.

So, nurture your relationship with God, recognize that He created you for a purpose, and authentically share your unique self with the people you love most. Imagine all that God can do through an entire family authentically living out who God created them to be.

  1. What role do you think your unique identity plays within your family's overall identity?
  2. Are there ways you diminish or hide parts of who you are to fit a certain mold at home?
  3. When have you seen an individual family member's passions or gifts enrich or improve the whole family? What did you learn from that?
  4. What steps can you take to create space for each family member to live out their personal identity?
