Daily Bible Reading—May 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Spiritual RenewalSample
May 18
Introduction
John 16:25–33: Today’s reading concludes the “Farewell Discourse” which began with John 14 (see the reading from May 12). While Jesus tells the disciples that the world will make them suffer, he assures them that he has defeated the world and that God loves them.
Today’s Key Verse: John 16:33b
[Jesus said:] “Be brave. I have defeated the world!”
Reflect
What is the victory that Jesus speaks of? In verse 28, Jesus tells the disciples that he is leaving the world and returning to God the Father. He came from God and was sent into the world to make God known (see John 1:18; 14:7), and his death and his return to God will complete his work see (John 17:4; 19:30). How has Jesus made God known to you?
Pray
Holy Jesus, you have defeated the world and I claim this victory in your name. I believe that you came from God and you have made God known to me and assured me of God’s love. Thank you, Lord Jesus! Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Acts 2:1–21: God sends the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
