What Is the Day of the Lord?

DAY 6 OF 7

Waiting for the day of the Lord

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

Christians often wonder when Christ will come back. After nearly 2000 years, we ask ourselves why He hasn’t returned yet. Perhaps you have even encountered some who ridiculed the idea that Christ’s return will ever happen. Peter says that this is actually what we should expect. He tells us that people will scoff at the idea that God still acts in this world.

Don’t be discouraged by this mockery. God didn’t forget His promise, nor is He indifferent to it. He is patient toward mankind! He gives people the time to repent from their sins and follow Jesus Christ. Christians are called to wait for His return and be ready. This is not a state of passivity. We should be actively expecting Him. Just like the five wise virgins, we should be prepared, so that we are not caught off guard. In fact, we should be devoting our entire life to Jesus. Living in the expectation of the day of the Lord is an active way of life.

Think about Peter’s words and meditate on this question: “Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God?” (2 Peter 3:11-12a)
