Exploring the Book of Acts: Workplace as Mission

DAY 6 OF 6

International Business

Europe’s first Christian congregation was planted in the home of an international businesswoman. While Lydia of Thyatira was living in the prosperous Roman colony of Philippi, she heard the gospel from Paul and his team. She was a God-fearer (a Gentile who worshipped Israel’s God) who had gathered with other women on the Sabbath to pray. The Lord opened her heart to Paul’s teaching and soon she and her entire household were baptized. Her house became the home base for Paul’s ministry and the young church in Philippi.

Read Acts 16:6-15 and then consider the following:

  1. The Spirit redirected Paul and his ministry team from Asia Minor to Macedonia. How does this redirection create anticipation for what the Lord will do in Philippi?
  2. Purple cloth was affordable to only the wealthiest customers. How does Lydia’s work as the overseas agent of a luxury goods manufacturer contribute to the furthering of the gospel?
  3. How do Lydia’s stature and resources contribute to the furthering of the gospel?
  4. What are your assumptions about people who work in international business? Pray that the Lord will call many modern-day Lydias to himself and to become patrons of gospel ministry.
